At Rockford University, the Men of Confidence Mentorship (MCM) program continues to demonstrate how intentional peer support can shape not only student success but student identity. Rooted in the principles of belonging, accountability, and growth, the program reflects the lasting influence of Dr. Karen Walker, whose leadership helped transform mentoring into a powerful, student-centered experience.
Throughout the semester, MCM created opportunities for students to connect, reflect, and lead. “Chop It Up” sessions, led by peer mentors, offered honest conversations about navigating academic pressures, athletic commitments, and personal challenges. These discussions encouraged mentees to embrace resilience, develop a growth mindset, and remain focused on their long-term goals.
MCM’s commitment to holistic development extends beyond leadership into global awareness. A session led by Maria Diemer, Executive Director of Global Affairs, introduced students to study abroad opportunities, sparking interest in experiences across the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. These conversations encouraged students to see themselves not only as campus leaders but as global citizens.
The semester concluded with “Bowl & Bond,” an off-campus event that brought students together in a relaxed, community-focused setting. While simple in design, moments like these reinforce the relationships and sense of belonging that are critical to student persistence.
Programs like MCM exemplify the impact of ACI’s Peer Mentoring initiative: creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow. Through Dr. Walker’s vision and the continued dedication of program leaders, MCM remains a model for how mentorship can build confidence, strengthen community, and prepare students to lead, on campus and beyond.
