When Madelyn P. talks about her college experience, she doesn’t start with her résumé. She starts with movement, creativity, and connection—three passions that have shaped her journey at Knox College and are guiding her toward a future dedicated to helping others.
“I have been dancing since I was three years old and acting since I was five,” Madelyn shares. “The arts are what brought me to Knox.” What she didn’t fully know when she arrived as a first-year student in Fall 2022 was how those passions would evolve into a path toward service, leadership, and a career centered on care for others.
Now a junior majoring in Anthropology with minors in Psychology and Biology, Madelyn has spent her time at Knox intentionally exploring careers that combine healing with creativity. Early in her college experience, she sought guidance about occupational therapy and dance movement therapy. That curiosity led her to shadow pediatric occupational therapists in Chicago after her first year, where she worked with children with a variety of developmental and physical needs.
“That experience confirmed that I want to help people in direct and meaningful ways,” she says. “It showed me how movement, expression, and care can come together to support others.”
Dance continues to anchor Madelyn’s life on campus. She quickly became involved in SHiNE Dance Fitness classes, eventually earning her instructor certification and leading classes herself. She has also taken on leadership roles within the Terpsicore Dance Collective, where she choreographs original pieces, supports fellow dancers, and helps foster a welcoming and expressive creative community.
Her leadership extends beyond dance. As one of Knox’s New Plays Workshop Coordinators, Madelyn helps bring new theatrical works to life. She organizes and hosts “Directing a Stage Reading” workshops, publicizes auditions and performances across campus, coordinates auditions, connects playwrights with directors and actors, and leads post-show discussions that encourage reflection and conversation.
“Creating spaces where people feel comfortable sharing their stories and creativity is really meaningful to me,” Madelyn explains. “It’s about building community.”
Madelyn’s impact reaches across multiple corners of campus life. She serves as Theatre Secretary, has directed a play every year she has attended Knox, and helped launch an outdoor adventure club that recently organized a camping trip for 25 students. Each of these experiences reflects her desire to create opportunities where people can connect, grow, and support one another.
Looking ahead, Madelyn plans to begin her professional journey as an EMT and eventually become a paramedic while continuing to teach dance fitness and choreography. Her goals reflect a powerful blend of service and creativity—two themes that have consistently shaped her college experience.
Madelyn is quick to acknowledge that scholarship support has played a significant role in making these opportunities possible.
“Any support for my education means so much to my family and me,” she says. “Knox has allowed me to explore so many interests, and I’m incredibly grateful to the alumni and donors who help make that possible. I hope to give back to Knox in the future as an alumna.”
Students like Madelyn embody the impact of ACI scholarship support, empowering students not only to succeed academically but to grow as compassionate leaders who strengthen their communities through creativity, service, and purpose.
